Conclusion
For probably 75% of all small Windows 2003 Servers installed, this SLES9
installation will replace nearly every feature that is being used. The other
25% are probably utilizing Active Directory to some extent. For these users,
you can still maintain control of your workstation by either utilizing
Microsoft's own "System Policy Editor", by creating custom Kixtart scripts,
or by purchasing additional software add-ons such as Novell's Xenworks or
their Open Exchange Server.
So, the next time you hear a report stating that the maintenance cost of
switching to Linux servers from Windows Servers will outweigh the licensing
fees, just remember that the "Proof is in the Pudding". Not only is a Linux
implementation cheaper to purchase, but also fixes many of the problems
plaguing Windows Administrators - from Roaming Profile problems using
different architectures, to the idiotic and overly difficult Parent/Child
File/Folder Permissions used by Windows Servers (and yes, SLES9/Samba can use
ACLs).
