J'utilise actuellement aussi une 9200 SE au boulot (kernel 2.4.26), et
une 9500 Pro à la maison (kernel 2.6.8 Debian compilé depuis les
sources). J'ai installé les drivers de ATI directement (fglrx). J'ai
fais ces installations sous Debian, en suivant la page:

La démarche proposée permet de générer des packages Debian qui sont pas
trop mal. Peut-être que ça peut t'aider pour ta SuSe.
A noter que j'avais déjà essayer d'installer depuis les packages ATI
directement auparavant sans trop de problème (en utilisant alien pour
convertir en package Debian). Le seul point à faire attention, c'est de
compiler le module fglrx. Si je me rappelle bien, il faut installer les
packages ATI, et ensuite compiler le module kernel dans
/lib/modules/fglrx/, et ensuite le charger.
En attachement, ma config XFree (en partie épurée). Elle a plus ou moins
été générée avec l'utilitaire d'ATI fglrxconfig. (avec ma config,
j'utilise l'agp du kernel, et pas celui du driver fglrx. Donc, ne pas
oublier de charger le module agpgart).
